La photo c'est quoi ? [Cliquer ici pour un agrandissement partiel de la scène] C'est une famille (si on peu l'appeler ainsi) d'Élephants de mer austraux (Mirounga leonina). Au centre un mâle alpha (ou mâle "dominant"), encore appelé "pacha", au cou marqué des cicatrices des combats avec d'autres mâles qui lui ont permis d'établir son statut. Près de lui trois de ses femelles. Juste à sa gauche un nouveau-né, ressemblant à un petit phoque tout noir. Au bord de l'eau une autre femelle du harem, avec son petit. À l'arrière on aperçoit deux individus en marge du groupe, dont un jeune mâle n'attendant que l'occasion de prendre le dessus sur le pacha.		The picture: what is it? [Click here for a partial enlargement of the scene] It is a family (if it can be called that way) of southern Elephant Seals (Mirounga leonina). In the middle of the picture lies an alpha (or "dominant") male (or "bull"); his neck is full of scars from fights with other males through wich he established his status. Close to him are three of his females, and just to his left a newborn pup, looking like a small black seal. At the water edge lies another female from the harem, with her pup. In the background can be seen two other individuals loosely related to the group, including a younger male waiting for an opportunity to take over the "dominant" bull.
Où est-ce ? Aux Îles Kerguelen dans la partie de l'Océan Austral qui prolonge vers le sud l'Océan Indien. La terre principale des Kerguelen est à peu près grande comme la Corse, les autres îles ne sont en comparaison que des îlots et l'archipel est compris dans un quadrilatère délimité par les parallèles 48:30 et 50°S et les méridiens 68:30 et 71°E. La photo est prise sur une plage de la Baie du Morbihan proche de la Pointe de Molloy à 12 km à l'ouest de la base de Port aux Français.		Where is it? At Kerguelen Islands, in the part of the Southern Ocean that appears as a southern continuation of the Indian Ocean. The Kerguelen mainland is about the size of Corsica, the other islands, by comparison, are mere islets and the archipelago lies between the parallels 48:30 and 50°S and between the meridians 68:30 and 71°E. The picture was taken on a beach of Morbihan Bay near Molloy Head, 12 km west of the Port aux Français base.
Quand ? Le 4 octobre 1995, au printemps austral, à la pleine saison de reproduction des éléphants de mer, lors d'une escale pendant une campagne océanographique (Antares 3) à laquelle je participais à bord du Marion Dufresne.		When? On 4th October 1995, in the austral spring, during the reproductive season of elephant seals, on a call from an oceanographic cruise (Antares 3) in which I was taking part onboard M.S. Marion Dufresne.
