La photo c'est quoi ? Une famille d'otaries, plus précisément une femelle et ses petits de l'année, jouant avec elle. L'espèce est l'Otarie antarctique (Arctocephalus gazella), également appelée Otarie de Kerguelen, répartie de la pointe nord du continent antarctique aux îles océaniques des Quarantièmes Rugissants, y compris l'Île Marion où elle cohabite avec l'Otarie subantarctique (Arctocephalus tropicalis) ou Otarie de l'île d'Amsterdam.		The picture: what is it? A family of fur seals, more precisely a female and her youngs from the year, playing with her. The species is the Antarctic Fur Seal (Arctocephalus gazella), also called Kerguelen Fur-Seal, distributed from the northern tip of Antarctica to the oceanic islands in the Roaring Forties, including Marion Island where it coexists with the Subantarctic Fur-Seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) or Amsterdam Island Fur-Seal.
Où est-ce ? Aux Îles Kerguelen dans la partie de l'Océan Austral qui prolonge vers le sud l'Océan Indien. La terre principale des Kerguelen est à peu près grande comme la Corse, les autres îles ne sont en comparaison que des îlots et l'archipel est compris dans un quadrilatère délimité par les parallèles 48:30 et 50°S et les méridiens 68:30 et 71°E. La photo est prise à proximité immédiate du rivage nord de la Baie du Morbihan, à 2 ou 3 km à l'ouest de la base de Port aux Français.		Where is it? At Kerguelen Islands, in the part of the Southern Ocean that appears as a southern continuation of the Indian Ocean. The Kerguelen mainland is about the size of Corsica, the other islands, by comparison, are mere islets and the archipelago lies between the parallels 48:30 and 50°S and between the meridians 68:30 and 71°E. The picture was taken in the immediate vicinity of the northern shore of Morbihan Bay, 2 or 3 km west of the Port aux Français base.
Quand ? Le 15 janvier 1999, lors d'une courte escale pendant une longue campagne océanographique (51 jours de mer). C'était l'été austral et la saison de reproduction proprement dite était achevée.		When? On 15 th January 1999, on a short call during a long oceanographic cruise (51 days at sea). It was the austral summer and the breeding season proper was over.
Est-ce une oeuvre à message ? Plutôt un conseil aux autres amateurs de chasse photographique qui auraient la chance de se rendre dans ces contrées lointaines. L'espèce humaine en a été absente jusqu'il y a peu de temps, les animaux n'ont pas appris à la craindre et il est facile de les approcher. Trop facile, au point de risquer de les déranger, même s'ils ne s'enfuient pas. Cela peut les perturber (un oiseau au nid dont la couvée peut avorter, par exemple), et du point de vue de l'image elle-même la photo d'un animal tremblant de nervosité n'est pas forcément une grande réussite. Un petit effort de discrétion peut en valoir la peine. Pour saisir les attitudes totalement naturelles de ces otaries, il m'a fallu patienter (un peu) et me faire complètement oublier, à plat-ventre dans un repli du terrain et à distance d'emploi d'un téléobjectif.		Is it a work with a message? Rather a recommendation to the other people fond of wildlife photography who may be lucky enough to visit such remote places. The human species has remained unknown there until quite recent times, and the local animals have not learned to fear it, so that it is easy to approach them. All too easy, with a serious risk of disturbing them, even if they do not run away. This can entail risks (for a nesting bird whose clutch will abort, for instance) whereas, from an aesthetical point of view, the picture of an animal shivering from nervousness is not necessarily a great achievement. It may be worth trying to keep a low profile. To catch the fully natural attitudes of these fur seals, I had to be (slightly) patient and make myself totally forgotten, lying flat on my belly in a fold of the ground, at a proper distance for using a telephoto lens.
